HOUSTON — Exxon Mobil said on Monday it aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions from its operations in oil and gas fields in West Texas and New Mexico by 2030.
The announcement came as part of Exxon’s previous plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its business, and as activists and some investors pressured the oil industry to do more to tackle climate change. But Exxon’s goal does not include offsetting emissions from customers such as car and truck owners and airlines.
Exxon, the nation’s largest oil company, said it will achieve net zero emissions by electrifying operations in the Permian Basin, which connects the two Southwest states, improving its ability to detect and capture methane gas, and eliminating routine combustion of waste gas. released from oil wells. The company said it could also use “nature-based solutions,” which could include planting trees.
Bart Cahir, Exxon’s senior vice president, said the effort is “one of the most ambitious and far-reaching studies in the Permian Basin.” “Our people are working hard to help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the products that make modern living possible,” he said.
The company, which is based out of Dallas, said its efforts “could encompass wind, solar hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, as well as natural gas and other emerging technologies.” He said it will use satellite surveillance and ground-based sensors to monitor leaks of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
The company said its plans will “require the support of well-designed policies and advances in technology that increase the availability and reliability of carbon-free energy in the region, including wind and solar.”
Texas has been a longtime leader in wind power and has recently started adding a number of large solar farms. But Republicans who run the state have often voiced their preference for fossil fuels, and unfairly blamed renewable energy for the days-long blackout of much of the state during a winter storm in February.
Darren Woods, Exxon’s CEO, said in a statement that the effort demonstrates “our commitment and support for society’s ambitions for a lower-emissions future.”
