Former President Donald Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, faced a tough rollout Monday, with technical glitches preventing some users from creating profiles.
The platform was available on Apple’s app store on Monday. However, some supporters of the former president, who hoped to immediately join the free site and interact with Mr. Trump, encountered issues that prevented them from successfully creating a profile and using the platform.
Reporters from The Washington Times and other media outlets failed to create accounts. They faced error messages that prevented them from creating accounts at various stages of the registration process.
Many prospective users who managed to sign up received a message that they were placed on a waiting list to start using the platform. According to screenshots posted on Twitter, some users had more than 100,000 in front of them.
The creation of the social media platform, its look and functionality that mirrors Twitter, comes a little over a year after Twitter and other major platforms banned Mr.
Truth Social describes itself as a “free from political discrimination” platform.
The platform has been operational for some over the past few weeks. Mr. Trump’s close allies – North Carolina Republican Representative Madison Cawthorn; Kari Lake, the Trump-backed candidate for Arizona Secretary of State; and Jenna Ellis, Mr. Trump’s former attorney, is already using Truth Social.
But the service won’t be “fully operational” until the end of March, according to Devin Nunes, CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group. Mr. Nunes, a former Republican from California, stepped down from his position in Congress last month to head Mr. Trump’s tech company.
He praised Truth Social as a safe haven for those who have been censored and “bootstrapped” from more mainstream sites like Facebook and Twitter in recent years.
“Honestly, it’s inspiring. “It’s really emotional for me to see people on the platform whose voices have been cancelled,” Nunes told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday. “And our main goal here is to give people their voices back.”
Truth Social will continue to moderate at least some of the content that users post. The company will use a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence service for content moderation that will provide a “family-friendly” community and eliminate any “illegal content”, Nunes told Fox Business last month.
