According to a regulatory filing from Digital World Acquisition Corp., former President Donald Trump has agreed to restrict social media use outside of the Truth Social platform, regardless of whether Twitter, Facebook or others lift bans against him.
Trump must first post on Truth Social and then wait six hours before posting elsewhere, with limited exceptions for policy, according to DWAC’s filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
“President Trump is generally required to make any social media post on Truth Social and cannot make the same post on any other social media site for six hours,” the file said. “From now on, he is free to post on any site he has access to. … It can also make a post from a personal account about political messaging, political fundraising or voting efforts on any social media site at any time.”
Last year, DWAC made plans for a merger deal with Trump Media & Technology Group, the team behind Mr. Trump’s social platform. The restrictions on Mr Trump were listed in part of DWAC’s dossier on TMTG and the licensing agreement it had with him, which the former president admitted was controversial.
“TMTG agrees with President Trump, whether President Trump’s personal or political behavior reflects negatively on TMTG’s reputation or brand or is considered offensive, dishonest, illegal, immoral or unethical or otherwise even signed a license agreement. It will be considered as a violation of the license agreement that harms TMTG’s brand or reputation.
Mr Trump’s willingness to stop posting on major social media sites provides further context for his desire to stay away from Twitter if the platform reverses its permanent ban on the former president. Mr Trump told Fox News last month that he would not be returning to Twitter after news that billionaire Elon Musk would buy the platform.
Twitter permanently suspended Mr Trump in January 2021 after the mutiny at the US Capitol, preventing him from interacting with the incumbent president’s tens of millions of followers in his service. Mr Musk is now poised to buy Twitter, with a deal expected to close this year, and last week he said he thinks Mr Trump’s access needs to be restored.
