As a young mom, I was very lucky, looking at older, more experienced moms and asking for advice – be it my own mother, friends or mentors. But as my girls get older, my desire is only to get practical advice, wisdom — wisdom from mothers who walked the path before you. Now, fast-forwarding, it’s funny how I find myself in that seat; where I can give wisdom and advice to new and young mothers. I blinked and am no longer in survival mode (most days!), but I am in the season where I can share what has worked for our family in the hopes it will encourage someone else. Today I want to tell you why it’s good to want the best of the best when it comes to a worthwhile endeavor. your book for your children.
Just as we want the best food for our children’s bodies, we must want the best for their minds.
For a long time I have the mindset that if I am going to make time for my children to read, I want it to bring something positive into their minds or hearts. It is worthy of their time and mine. When I compare the books featured in our libraries, book fairs and Amazon to the classic books I read growing up and read to my daughters, I see a huge gap. While many (but not all!) books published today lack rich syntax, richer stories, and noble characters, the classic children’s books that fill my home library have all of these ingredients in abundance. And isn’t that what we want to read to our children? Stories that arouse their curiosity, stimulate their imagination and expand their vocabulary? Isn’t that one of the best gifts we can give them? It’s good to have high standards for content that comes into your home.
Pop culture and cartoon character books are fine, but I’ve often seen them retelling a movie or TV show they’ve watched before. If you really want a child to love to read, it’s not because he knows a cartoon character on the cover, it’s because he’s good. Story inside. And while most classics are good not because they’re old but because they have good stories, many have beautiful illustrations that help tell that story!
And when I say classic children’s literature, don’t let that scare you off – these are the stories you grew up with and the books you probably already own! good stories like black stallion, Paddington, Tales of Peter Rabbitand many more well-known stories that broaden their horizons. Our children should have the opportunity to experience adventure stories, fairy tales, short biographies and different periods of history. Beautiful stories like this one that strengthen their imaginations and enrich their vocabulary. help them stay a little longer and starve them for better books.

I’ll tell you a secret: Reading quality books to your children only helps them on their way to school. Whether old or new, reading books with more complex sentence structure (i.e. more than 3-4 words in a sentence) and larger vocabulary will help them build a solid foundation for their educational journey. The stories you read to them now – yes, even before they go to bed – will help them understand so much more as they navigate English and literature in middle and high school. One more reason to be conscious about the books you read!
So wherever you are on your journey to motherhood, it is my desire to encourage you to take a look at the books in your home. Pop-culture characters are all good and beautiful. What about classic stories? Why not give them a chance to see how they make a difference, even if it’s for one season? After all, they’re classics for a reason!
