There are so many things going through my mind right now, but as we head into the weekend here are five things I want to share, recent purchases, reader emails and more!
1. My Last Autumn Decor Shopping
I’ve been using the same faux pumpkins for 7-8 years, so I was excited to add something new and interesting to my collection. i found these Natural Woven Pumpkins which comes in different shapes and sizes. added to ours Autumn Favorites Guide, more! I added this when ordering at Pottery Barn Harvest Spice candle to my cart. in ours Autumn Candle post and that’s fine. The packaging is even better. You don’t even need to wrap this candle for a gift. The box is so cute, so just add a ribbon and tag and voila, it’s a festive fall gift!
2. Social Media and Teens (and that’s not good!)
Earlier this summer, I thought about buying Tik Tok for my teen but I’m VERY glad I didn’t. investigative reporters at The Wall Street Journal, How Tik Tok Offers Sex and Drug Videos to Minors. It’s pretty disturbing, so I hate to recommend you read it, but it also shows you what a teenager’s web surfing can be like. quickly spiral into dark content.
And. no surprises here, but internal Facebook documentation showed it Instagram Is Toxic To Teenage Girls. Bottom line: the algorithm is not the “friend” of the teenager.
If there’s one tip I hear over and over again from moms of teens, it’s this: wait as long as possible to give them and shrink when they do with parental controls and time limits. If your daughter has it, I highly recommend watching the social media section. Young Girl Etiquette Course because he’s not just talking about safety, but how not to fall into the comparison game on social media.
3. Two Messages I Got
“We think that because children grow up, the purpose of the child is to grow up. But the purpose of a child is to be a child.” Tom Stoppard
I recently received a very kind email from a mother who came across DoSayGive’s Instagram page and was encouraged to find a place that reflects her hopes of keeping her kids sweet and innocent for as long as possible. I am very happy to know that in a society that rushes to raise children so fast, there are mothers who value childhood and want to encourage it with books, toys and even clothes.
I also received a message from a photo reader from a school “reader” second grade girl who was brought home from school. It was dark and scary, so much so that the little girl looked up and told her mother that she probably shouldn’t have read the book. Yeah!
I’m sure my readers are tired of hearing me say this, but good books are one of the best ways to keep kids “small” and the media (hello, YouTube Kids and Netflix) are one of the fastest ways not to. Fill them with beautiful stories of adventure, imagination, courage, and virtue and you’ll see it come to fruition in their games. I’ve seen it in all my children.
If you need a good book recommendation, you can search our site. We’ve got new library listings with seasonal selection books for preschool and early primary school children.
