Elizabeth Holmes’ testimony will extend into its third week on Tuesday with more questions from prosecutors.
Ms. Holmes, who founded the blood testing initiative Theranos after leaving Stanford University in 2003, accused of defrauding investors and patients With claims made by Theranos about its technology and business. The company raised $945 million in funding and performed millions of blood tests before falling apart amid the scandal in 2018.
Cross-examination of Miss Holmes started last week, when prosecutors questioned him on evidence directly linked to problems with Theranos’ tests. Prosecutors must convince the jury that Ms. Holmes knows she’s cheating on people – something she resists, claiming ignorance and naivety.
His testimony is expected to expire on Tuesday, and his lawyers may conclude their defense this week.
In court, prosecutors showed personal documents such as text messages and notes written by Ms. Holmes, emphasizing that as CEO and founder, she was ultimately responsible for the problems at Theranos.
They also used reports on blood tests that Theranos modified Ms. Holmes before sending them to potential investors and business partners. Ms. Holmes, 37, admitted to adding the pharmaceutical company’s logos and deleting or changing its language in reports that investors received as confirmation from these companies. said he wished “had done it differently”.
In her first statement, Ms. Holmes’ lawyers tried to show that there was some truth to many of Holmes’ allegations. They used emails from former lab directors who shared the results of successful tests, as well as discussions with the military about potential work.
Prosecutors repeatedly backed out by citing other correspondence that made it clear that Ms. Holmes was aware of the problems. But all this was overshadowed by Mrs. Holmes. A shocking testimony about Ramesh Balwani, her ex-boyfriend and a former Theranos executive. Ms. Holmes tearfully accused Mr. Balwani, who is about 20 years older than her, of emotional and physical abuse. Mr. Balwani said he was controlling him and that it had affected his leadership. When Mr. Leach asked him to read his loving text messages with Mr. Balwani, he wept again on the podium.
Ms. Holmes and Mr. Balwani were indicted together in 2018. Both pleaded not guilty. Balwani, who denied the abuse allegations, will be tried next year.
