Do you have any conflicts about GoFundMe being a non-profit company?
In fact, I think what allows us to do what we do and build such a good platform is being for-profit, because we need to run a global, world-class platform service. We must continue to evolve. We must continue to introduce new features. We really need to think about the trust and security side of our business. We have to manage all payments. So being a nonprofit gives us the ability to hire great people and for those people to compete with and make up for other tech companies, but it also has the purpose of being able to say I work for a company that does something really important. In the world.
What are you doing to minimize fraud and abuse incidents on the platform?
We live in a human society and the vast majority of people have no good or bad intentions. There are some people who don’t mean well, but that goes for anyone running a large consumer business or even a small business. You might have someone to buy something from your shop and try it out. So he tells me we only see human nature, nothing more than that.
In terms of how we deal with it, it’s a mix of technology looking for specific signals and flags. And we’ve been doing this for 11 years, so we haven’t really seen everything under the sun. And then there’s a trust and safety team who are very well trained and have a really good playbook on what to look for.
How do you make sure the money is actually being used effectively? And how do you judge that?
Our job is to ensure that the money reaches the right beneficiary. At the end of the day, we’ve worked hard to confirm that this person is the intended person. Once they have this money, it’s their money and they can choose. So we don’t have a way to go as far as what they use to spend the money on, a debit or credit card. It’s pretty rare that we’ve ever heard of someone doing anything other than reservations. But at the end of the day, it’s their money.
Would the world be a better place if GoFundMe didn’t need to exist in the first place?
No. Life happens and it has its good and bad sides. A fundamental part of being human is wanting to get through together. This will never go away. And we are a place where people come together and help each other. None of us can get through life on our own.
How has the way people use the site changed during the pandemic?
The first phase was things like PPE People don’t have face masks. Gloves of healthcare workers, etc. did not have. All these things were running out. Then you started seeing curfews for small businesses, curfews for their employees, and thus countless campaigns. This was not new to GoFundMe, but the scale of it was completely different. And then the longer people were unemployed, the more they sought rent benefits and that sort of thing. With the murder of George Floyd, we saw a lot of activity related to the social justice movement.
But since the middle of last year, everything is waning and a more normal life is coming. We’ve seen weddings, we’ve seen animals, we’ve seen honeymoons. We just saw some kind of campaign for the USA men’s bobsleigh team to raise $100,000 to help them prepare and get to the Winter Olympics. Everything you can imagine about people getting on with their lives.
