There are some household items that are timeless heirlooms that have been passed down from generation to generation: china, silver, Christmas dinners and decor. If you (or your mom or grandma) are into beautiful table setting, you’re probably aware of the timeless trend of lettuce items. My grandmother, aunt, and mother would always collect and display lettuce items, also called cabbage wares. So today I wanted to share some plates at all price points if you want to explore the history of this tradition and build your own collection!
There is absolutely nothing that adds a splash of color, a touch of spring to a table like a bowl or plate of lettuce. Lettuce items, both modern and vintage, add a pop of color when arranging place settings and are especially festive during the Easter season.
But what are their origins? We did some digging and the history is enough to make you want to start your own collection! While porcelain plates in the form of fruits and vegetables were widely produced in 18th and 19th century England, lettuce dishes became popular in the United States in the 1960s Palm Beach; just at the same time, the Lily Pulitzer signature gained popularity with her brightly colored dresses and outfits. Artist Dodie Thayer created the lettuce ware pieces entirely by hand for Jackie Kennedy Onassis and the Duchess of Windsor – pottery pieces that each took about two weeks. And they’ve been the cornerstone of Southern entertainment ever since.
