Meta opens its first physical store

BURLINGAME, California. — Facebook parent company Meta opened its first physical store in Burlingame, California to showcase hardware products such as virtual and augmented reality glasses and eyewear.

Open to the public from Monday, the store is made for those who want to test products like Ray-Ban Stories, Meta’s AR glasses and sunglasses, as well as the Portal video calling device and Oculus virtual reality headsets.

Shoppers still need to order the glasses from Ray-Ban, but they can purchase other items in-store.

“A very tangible step away from social media and advertising that misleads people and elections, spying and data and all that, to a very physical representation of clean, stylish, well-designed, great hardware that gets you moving, ah, a tech investment firm. said Omar Akhtar, director of research at Altimeter.

Akhtar said she “didn’t believe in virtual reality” until she sat down and tried the Oculus headset for the first time, and she believes that will apply to others who can wear glasses and try it out. Apple pioneered physical retail stores in Silicon Valley, and Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, likely hopes to repeat at least some of that success.

“The truth is that physical things never went away and they never will,” Akhtar said. “Everyone is aware that even if we are going to step into the virtual world, we have to access it with hardware.”
