CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida – NASA‘s newest X-ray observatory launched into orbit on Thursday to shine a light on exploded stars, black holes and other violent high-energy events unfolding across the universe.

Space X launched the spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center on a $188 million mission. It is called IXPE, which stands for Imaging X-ray Polarization Explorer.

The observatory – actually three telescopes in one – will reveal the most dramatic and extreme parts of the universe like never before, scientists said.

“IXPE will open a new window in the X-ray sky,” said Brian Ramsey. NASA‘ the deputy principal scientist said this week.

Operations should begin next month. NASA collaborating with the Italian Space Agency on the project.
