Dr. Cassell was born Eric Jonathan Goldstein on August 29, 1928 in New York to Hyman and Anne (Lake) Goldstein and grew up in Queens. His father was a civil engineer at the post office. Dr. Cassell said she and her brother changed their last name to be close to the original pronunciation of their immigrant grandparents, before being changed on Ellis Island when they came from Russia.
Dr. Cassell earned a BA from Queens College, a MA from Columbia University, and a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1950. He was a captain in the Army Medical Corps in France from 1956 to 1958, and did his internship and residency at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
He was recruited to the Death Task Force at Hastings Center as a result of an article he wrote in 1971.
“It literally changed my life, broadened my horizons, pushed me to become literate, and gave substance to a genetic predisposition to philosophy.” Dr. Cassell wrote on his website. “I started to wonder if a doctor could actually treat patients in a helpful and specific way as they were dying.”
“Now we know that not only can you do it, you should also do it,” he added.
From 1981 to 1986 he led the Medical Ethics and Values Study Program at Cornell University’s medical school. He retired from his internal medicine practice in 1998.
In addition to his son Stephen from his first marriage to Joan Cassell, which ended in divorce, he was survived by a daughter, Justine; his wife, Patricia Owens; her stepchildren Margaret, Theresa, Shirley, James and Rebecca Owens; a grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and a step-granddaughter.
