LOS ANGELES — For months, thieves have been raiding cargo containers on trains near downtown Los Angeles, taking packages from people across the United States and lining the tracks with discarded boxes.
Packages are coming from retailers including Amazon, REI and others, CBSLA reported on Thursday. The sea of debris left behind contains items that thieves apparently thought were not valuable enough to retrieve.
When CBSLA cameras were at the scene, a person was seen fleeing with a container used to hold small packages, and a Union Pacific railroad police officer was seen following two people apparently passing by the packages.
It was the same scene back in November when NBC4 showed thousands of boxes thrown along tracks lined with homeless camps in the Lincoln Park area northeast of downtown.
Trains passing by are carrying wide-open containers and packages are rolling, NBC4 reports. The station said the video showed two men walking along the tracks, one of whom looked like a bolt cutter in his hand.
Union Pacific told CBSLA that the railroad is concerned about increased cargo thefts in California.
We have increased the number of Union Pacific special agents on patrol and used and investigated additional technologies to help us combat this criminal activity. We will also continue to work with our local law enforcement partners and elected leaders.”
