But somewhere on the road from a novice startup to a Silicon Valley juggernaut, their company Juul has tragically gone astray. Instead of subverting Big Tobacco and hastening the end of smoking, Juul’s flavored e-cigarettes have become a popular ramp for a new generation of nicotine addicts.

Intrigued by sugary fruit flavors and vibrant marketing, teens like Jackie Franklin discovered that Juul had an undeniable nicotine rush that they were increasingly craving. After becoming addicted in high school, he was vaping as much as three Juul pods a day.

Now, Franklin can’t pedal his bike without gasping for breath, stopping to breathe from an inhaler, which doctors say is probably vaping-induced asthma.

“I feel like my lungs are literally getting crunchy,” she said. “I can’t explain – it hurts so much.”

In “Move Fast and Vape Things,” a new documentary from The New York Times about FX and Hulu, you’ll hear from public health experts, including Scott Gottlieb, the former head of the Food and Drug Administration, and they’re telling Juul for causing it. you blame. a youth vaping crisis. And some advertising and marketing executives, like Franklin, who helped make e-cigarettes so appealing to younger customers, say now that the indecisiveness they felt before has become sheer regret.

“Your first instinct is, ‘Wow, successful. “People are using it,” said Erica Halverson, Juul’s former marketing manager. “The other instinct is like, ‘Wow, the wrong people are using it’.”
