YouTube said it was wrong to remove a video of a speech by the Rep. Darrell Issa in which he belittled RussiaCOVID-19 vaccine program.
YouTube, owned by Google, admitted its mistake and said it reinstated the video, but the video still doesn’t exist because the original uploader deleted the video.
Mr Issa’s speech was given at the EDGE 2021 conference in July. In his speech, he said the following about the Sputnik vaccine: Russia “wasn’t the first with the vaccine and it doesn’t work but Russia”
YouTube did not say why the video was removed.
“Sometimes we make mistakes and we’re working to fix the issue as soon as possible when flagged,” YouTube told the Washington Times.
Mr Issa was not responsible for uploading the video. According to a California Republican spokesperson, he learned that the video had been removed from the conference team earlier this week.
“In my now censored speech, I stated: Russia“The vaccine program was inferior to Operation Warp Speed,” Mr Issa said on Twitter. “And the Russians have repeatedly exaggerated the effectiveness of their vaccines every time another country has released a better one. Is any free speech allowed about vaccines?”
Technology platforms like YouTube use a combination of human and computer programs to enforce rules on their platforms. YouTube says it has more than 2 billion monthly active users and people watch over a billion hours of video on YouTube every day.
Prior to YouTube’s admission of error, Mr Issa’s spokesperson said that YouTube’s actions against conservatives’ content showed that it had a political bias.
Mr Issa’s speech at the conference can still be seen elsewhere, including on Vimeo.
During the speech, Mr. Issa advocated for the federal government to help workers catch up with competition from other countries such as China and Russia.
“This is like when Sputnik went up,” Mr. Issa said in his speech. “Oddly enough, you know, the Russians called their vaccine Sputnik, which I thought was interesting because they weren’t the first with the vaccine and it doesn’t quite work, but Russia, Sputnik is still their pride. But like Sputnik, we are behind our competition.”
