The statement Tuesday by Frances Haugen, a former Facebook product manager and whistleblower, about how Facebook and Instagram can be addictive and harmful to children, has sparked anger among online parents.
Some parents questioned their own complicity in allowing their young children to have social media accounts. Others blamed platforms for malicious content.
One user tweeted “My daughter was harmed by Instagram” in response to Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone’s comment about the hearing. “It became a brutal catchphrase to bounce back from body dysmorphia issues that arose exactly when she started using Instagram.”
Another parent said it was the family members’ responsibility to take precautions by keeping children off social media.
“I’m a parent and I’ve protected my kids,” the user tweeted. “I am a parent and I have protected my sons. It’s that simple. I’m not a fan of FB but you all need to have common sense.”
Another added that there is no doubt that Facebook and Instagram are “harming young people.”
“My daughter is 12 years old, she doesn’t have these apps. Parents seriously, don’t let your kids get into these apps,” wrote the user.
