Four former employees said that with the leadership changes, Facebook is doing everything it can to make Instagram the main attraction for younger audiences. This coincided with Facebook realizing that it was grappling with it. data privacy and other scandals will never be the target of young people, people said.

Three former employees said Instagram had begun to focus on the “time spent teens” data point. The goal was to increase the time teens spend in the app with features like Instagram Live, a broadcasting tool, and Instagram TV, where people upload videos that last up to an hour.

Instagram has also increased its global marketing budget. In 2018, he dedicated $67.2 million to marketing. In 2019, this increased to a planned $127.3 million, followed by $186.3 million last year and $390 million this year, according to internal documents. Documents show that most of the budgets are devoted to influencing young people. Two employees said Mr Mosseri had approved the budgets.

The money was earmarked for marketing categories like “making Instagram a favorite place for young people to express themselves,” and cultural programs for events like the Super Bowl, according to the documents.

Even so, Instagram’s anxiety has grown. A 2019 marketing memo noted that while young people still flock to it, they show no interest in Facebook or the Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp. Stating that the company should only focus on getting young people to use the photo sharing site, the note said, “We don’t see cross-brand interest.”

When the coronavirus pandemic hit last year and prompted people to stay home for safety, “time spent on youth” increased to an average of three to four hours a day in the United States, compared to the previous one to two hours, the two former employees said. Adults spent 30 minutes to 45 minutes a day on the site.
