Apple, a major supplier for iPhones, suspended operations in Shenzhen on Monday after the Chinese city implemented a lockdown to control a spike in coronavirus cases.
Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics company that assembles the phones, said it will shift production lines to other plants in China to keep things running as well as possible, and it’s up to the local government to get the Shenzhen plant back up and running.
Disruptions in Shenzhen, a major hub alongside Hong Kong, have been the latest blow to the global supply chain due to the virus and China’s strict zero-COVID policy.
While infection rates in China remain low compared to other countries, the Beijing government frequently orders mass testing or curfews due to reported cases, and Hong Kong is seeing an unprecedented increase.
Hong Kong has reported about 3,780 COVID-19 deaths and nearly 700,000 cases since the end of January, according to The New York Times.
The increase raises questions about the sustainability of the communist government’s approach and its ability to suffocate the virus on Hong Kong, an island with special administrative status.
