Wong has earned a reputation for always being right. Journalists quote their work in their articles and refer to their scoops. “In the beginning people were like, ‘Who is he? How does he have this information?” says. “But over time, I built trust. You need to prove that your information is valid.”
It got to the point where companies created Easter eggs for him to find. Newton says many have given up on trying to hide their codes and just play along. “There were even instances where developers put a ‘Hello Jane’ style message in their code,” he says. “They know it’s coming.”
Wong’s work highlights the often overlooked research and development divisions of companies that can be a PR win. The coders at Meta love her so much that they’ve formed a Jane Manchun Wong fan club whose members include Andrew Bosworth, the company’s CTO. “We value their input and feedback that helps improve our products,” says a Meta spokesperson.
But even if they know he’s coming, that doesn’t mean they always welcome him. Flaming and surprise are key elements in keeping the air surrounding a tech launch or feature release, and Wong blasted these secrets by breaking through the elaborately constructed walls of tech companies. With a single tweet, it effectively destroys any backlog or narrative they have about a feature.
That’s exactly why, in fact, Wong says he tweeted the features before they went public. To him, secrecy and subsequent hype are problematic. Apps are used by people; Shouldn’t these people know what updates and products are being worked on behind the scenes?
It’s not hard to imagine that companies might be offended by a social media celebrity exaggeratingly revealing their secrets on Twitter. As an Asian woman in her 20s, Wong, who constantly posts bombshells about tech companies on Twitter, is a prime target for the type of harassment and trolling that can offend even the most powerful people. “I wish more people would understand that I’m a person,” she says. “I am more than a machine.”
