Zhu says he always saw the technology field as his destiny. She grew up in a highly competitive family in China as the daughter of two professors. When he was 12, his father was a visiting professor in the US and told stories about the innovation he saw in Silicon Valley. Named one of the most influential women in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Business Times in 2017 and the Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2018, she is now a Fellow of the Distinguished Career Institute at Stanford.
“My mom always told me, ‘You only have monovision. You have to work twice as hard.’ I’ve always worked really hard. It has become a habit,” says Zhu, whose eyes were corrected eight years ago. She is grateful “beyond words” for her experience at the institute. “I integrated the courses and knowledge into the way I study, but the biggest impact on me was the rigorous spirit of MIT,” she says, adding that she wanted MIT so much that she skipped the honeymoon to pay for her tuition.
Zhu settled in the Bay Area after living in 39 places in 13 years. When she’s not working, she jogs 30 miles a week and spends time with her local MIT classmates. His close family, the golden retriever Pokee, lives with his mother-in-law and family.
