About 20 Apple stores have closed as the Omicron variant has grown.

Apple said on Monday that nearly 20 retail stores were closed due to a wave of Covid-19 cases among employees who left stores unsafe and understaffed.

A handful of stores in Washington State also closed due to the storms, the company said.

Some of the stores were closed as a precaution to protect employees and customers from infection; others were shut down because there weren’t enough healthy employees to stay open.

“We monitor conditions regularly and will adjust our health measures to support the well-being of customers and employees,” Apple spokesperson Amy Bessette said in a statement, adding that employees are tested regularly.

Apple employees are increasingly frustrated with their work environment as the Omicron variant fuels a nationwide case spike. On Christmas Eve, several dozen Apple employees out of the stores demand better pay, more sick leave and better working conditions.
