Thanks to a new feature in Amazon’s Alexa, you will soon be able to communicate with the voices of your deceased loved ones.
Alexa AI chief scientist Rohit Prasad demonstrated the technology at Amazon’s annual MARS conference Wednesday in Las Vegas.
The demonstration video showed a young boy reading “The Wizard of Oz” before Alexa asked his grandmother to finish reading the book to him.
Mr Prasad told the crowd: “This required a breakthrough where we had to learn to produce high-quality sound with less than a minute of recording versus hours of recording in a studio.”
Mr Prasad has previously said he was surprised at the relationships people have developed with their Alexa.
“In this friendship role, the human traits of empathy and emotion are key to building trust,” he said. “These qualities have become even more important in the ongoing epidemic when many of us have lost a loved one.”
Mr Prasad said that while artificial intelligence cannot remove the pain of this loss, it can help make memories of relatives or friends lasting.

Amazon is currently developing the feature, and Mr Prasad has not told the public when it will be available.
