President Biden‘s alliance with labor unions is showcased Wednesday in a proposal that supports union shops in its push for electric vehicles, rejects Tesla and other non-union factories while promoting infrastructure programs, and offering extra federal subsidies for cars assembled only at union factories.
Speaking on the floor of the General Motors “Factory Zero” electric vehicle facility in Detroit, Mr. Biden highlighted his close ties to unions. He also spoke about how the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill he signed this week would benefit one of his biggest backers, the workforce.
“We’re going to kickstart the production and recycling of batteries, materials and parts, increase the production of clean vehicles with new loans and new tax credits,” said Mr. Biden, adding that “American-made, union-made clean vehicles for consumers.”
Mr. Biden welcomed the proposal for a tax credit that would allow automakers to stay a step ahead in the fast-growing electric vehicle market with union workers. The president said the proposal would benefit the environment and blue-collar workers by rewarding union shops for switching to electric vehicles.
Automakers with non-union plants and lawmakers in states with those plants are fouling. They say the tax credit rewards unions for supporting Mr Biden during the 2020 election at the expense of non-union workers.
“Union bosses are the big bankers of the Democratic Party,” Tennessee Republican Senator Bill Hagerty told the Washington Times. Democrats will sacrifice jobs, they will sacrifice the economy, and they will even sacrifice climate targets to pay union bosses.”
At stake is a proposal hidden inside Mr. Biden’s massive $1.8 trillion welfare and climate bill set for a House vote this week. If the bill becomes law, the provision would provide $7,500 in tax breaks for consumers purchasing electric vehicles through 2026.
Car buyers will be eligible for an additional $4,500 tax credit if they purchase a vehicle manufactured in a US factory operating under a union-negotiated bargaining agreement.
Currently, only General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis NV owned auto factories will be able to benefit from additional tax incentives.
The tax credit will not cover the majority of electric vehicles on the road today, putting non-union automakers like Toyota and Tesla at a disadvantage.
Tennessee is home to several non-union auto factories, including Volkswagen’s ID.4 plant in Chattanooga. Mr. Hagerty said that if the tax incentive goes into effect, it will hurt workers in Tennessee who have the right to work.
“This is an incentive to move production to a unionized factory,” he said. “It makes it difficult for us to pull the next electric vehicle factory in Tennessee.”
Some of Mr. Biden’s party also spent the extra $4,500 in tax credits.
West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin III is a centrist who threatens to block Mr. Biden’s massive spending bill. In an interview with Automotive News, Mr Manchin said it would be “un-American” and “wrong” to encourage buying electric vehicles from union shops.
“We shouldn’t be using everybody’s tax dollars to pick winners and losers,” Mr Manchin told the auto industry trade publication.
Christopher Meagher, the White House deputy press secretary, defended the tax incentive, saying it would give workers good jobs, good wages and good benefits.
“There’s a history – there’s a long history of using tax credits to spur elections, and it’s true here too,” Mr Meagher told reporters. “They will cut the cost of EVs by $12,500 for a mid-range family. They will support the supply of domestic production throughout the country. And they will position America to surpass the world when it comes to electric vehicles.”
When asked why management is encouraging General Motors employees over employees at non-union facilities, Mr. Meagher again said it’s about job creation.
“A big part of the president’s climate strategy is about jobs,” he said. “And he believes you can do both: You can move forward in forcing an economy to make these EE add-ons by creating jobs – and well-paid union jobs – to meet these goals while simultaneously considering the impact on the climate. nationwide ins. ”
Still, non-union automakers say they employ tens of thousands of US workers and should not be unfairly deterred.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a Twitter message that Mr. Biden is a “puppet” for United Auto Workers, the huge union that plays a key role in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party.
Toyota ran a full-page ad in national newspapers urging lawmakers to “not play politics with the environment.”
This isn’t the first time Mr. Musk has argued with Mr. Biden. In August, the White House downplayed Mr. Musk at a meeting with UAW officials and auto executives on electric vehicles.
“He didn’t mention Tesla once and praised GM and Ford for leading the EV revolution. Does that sound a little biased or something?” said Mr. Musk.
