BEIJING (AP) — Tesla has recalled 14,684 Model 3s in its second recall in the country this month, due to a software glitch that could cause crashes, China’s market regulator said on Friday.
The State Administration of Market Regulation said the recall affected both imported vehicles and vehicles manufactured in China.
The recalled cars said it did not display units such as miles or kilometers per hour for their speed when in Track Mode, which can lead to collisions in extreme cases.
In early April, management said that Tesla had recalled 127,785 Model 3s due to potential problems with semiconductors that could also cause accidents.
This latest recall affects 1,850 Model 3s and 12,834 imported from the same model manufactured in China from January 12, 2019 to March 25, 2022.
The announcement said that Tesla Motors (Beijing) and Tesla (Shanghai) will upgrade the software of vehicles covered by the recall for free using an over-the-air (OTA) technology, allowing vehicle owners to complete the process. The company will contact owners of vehicles that cannot be upgraded this way so that upgrades can be made at Tesla service centers.
In June 2021, Tesla recalled more than 285,000 vehicles, including many made in China, to fix a software issue. This was followed by a recall of nearly 200,000 people in December.
