COVINGTON, L. – On Thursday, a disabled high school teacher was attacked by a student after a TikTok challenge went viral, according to police.
Police arrested 18-year-old Larrianna Jackson, who was charged with assaulting a teacher in Louisiana. Ms. Jackson on Thursday at St. He remained in Tammany Prison.
The name of the injured teacher, 64, was not released.
Other students recorded the attack on their cell phones, apparently because it’s linked to a viral TikTok trend called “devious licks.” In the video of Wednesday’s attack, a student whom police say is Ms. Jackson hurls blows at the teacher after the first punch knocked her out of her chair.
Each month, students are encouraged to share images of themselves doing some sort of vandalistic or murderous act, and the challenge for October is “slap a staff member”.
The challenge has already sparked incidents in Missouri and South Carolina, prompting the California teachers’ union to send out a recommendation that educators view “jokes” as a crime.
“Slapping a teacher is assault and assault, whether or not it results in injury, and is absolutely unacceptable and illegal,” said the California Teachers Association. “Unauthorized recording in a classroom on another school property is illegal.”
Covington Police is issuing a search warrant for the cell phones that recorded Wednesday’s attack, and they said future arrests are expected.
TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance did not comment on the phenomenon. The platform is popular with young users for posting videos.
Authorities are concerned about what appears to be increased possibilities for violence. Next month, the challenge will be to “kiss your friend’s girlfriend at school,” and by January, participants are expected to “pump up nipples.”
