Donald Trump legal team reconsiders Twitter case after Elon Musk

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team is reconsidering the lawsuit he filed against Twitter for Elon Musk’s takeover of the social media platform.

Mr. Trump’s lawyer, John P. Coale, said he expects to meet with Mr. Musk after the eccentric billionaire receives negotiating authorization for the company.

“Once all this happens, we hope to sit down with him and talk about the case and see what we can do,” Mr. Coale said.

Mr Trump sued Twitter last year for alleged violations of the First Amendment through online censorship after the platform permanently banned him for comments he made in the wake of the January 6 riot in the US Capitol.

Dropping the case is an option that will be on the table, according to Mr. Coale.

Mr. Musk and Mr. Trump, who backed start-up Trust Social, are now competitors in the social media industry and have recently taken a look at the appeal of the other’s platform.

After the announcement that Mr Musk would take over Twitter, Mr Trump said he would not return to Twitter but told Fox News that he thought Mr Musk was a good man. “I’M BACK!” Mr Trump tweeted on the Truth Social platform on Thursday. Published a post that said.

Truth Social’s app topped the chart of free apps on Apple’s App Store this week, with Mr Musk drawing attention to it on Twitter, noting that Mr Trump’s service has outpaced Twitter and TikTok on the chart.

But Mr. Musk also coined the name Truth Social on Wednesday, saying it should be called “The Trumpet” instead.

“Truth Social (the horrible name) exists because Twitter censors free speech,” Mr Musk said on Twitter.

Hale and Dorr, of Twitter’s law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering, responded to Mr Trump’s lawsuit, raising questions affecting their case over Mr Musk’s takeover to Twitter. The company declined to comment.

Mr. Musk’s lawyers, who worked on the Twitter acquisition at law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, did not respond to requests for comment.

Mr Trump’s lawsuit against Twitter is pending in federal court in California, and Mr Coale said he does not expect a resolution before Mr Musk’s takeover is expected to be completed later this year.
