Google reports 3.4 billion ads removed, 5.6 million advertisers launched

Google said Wednesday it blocked more than 3.4 billion ads and suspended 5.6 million advertiser accounts in 2021 as part of new efforts to fight disinformation and fraud.

Google eliminated nearly 300 million more ads in 2021 than before 2020however, the number of ads that saw their distribution restricted by Google decreased by nearly 700 million year-over-year.

Scott Spencer, VP of Product Management at Google, said the change to the app is due to the renewal of more than 30 policies for advertisers and publishers.

Spencer wrote on the company’s blog: “In 2021, we continued to see bad actors working more advanced and on a larger scale, using a variety of tactics to evade our detection.” “This included creating thousands of accounts at once and using techniques such as cloaking and text manipulation to make our reviewers and systems appear different from the ad content they were showing to a user, making that content harder to detect and counteract.”

According to the report, which removed 652.1 million ads, the policy that yielded the most ad removals last year was “abusing the ad network”. Another 286.8 million ads were stopped due to adult content, trademark issues and inappropriate content resulted in the removal of 136.9 million ads and 125.6 million ads respectively.

Mr Spencer said the number of account-level suspensions had tripled between 2020 and 2021. He said the company is working to verify advertisers in 180 countries, and advertisers who do not complete verification when prompted are automatically suspended.

Google’s merger with Amazon and Meta, formerly known as Facebook, appears to be on track to rise in the majority of all digital advertising dollars spent this year, according to a Digiday report in February.

Major events in 2022 also have the potential to skew future sanctions metrics, as Google says it has already blocked more than 8 million ads related to the war in Ukraine and has removed more than 60 state-funded media sites from its platforms.

Mr Spencer said thousands of Googlers around the world are working day and night to stop the abuse of advertising services.
