One thing that has stood out from this trial so far is how Frances Haugen, once a Facebook whistleblower, used insider knowledge of the social network to provide new insights that few outsiders have ever heard of.
Referring to internal documents she provided to lawmakers, Ms Haugen emphasized that the problems with the social network are related to Facebook’s algorithms and the decisions the company makes regarding what people see on the platform. Ms. Haugen said lawmakers should demand more transparency about its algorithms and internal metrics if they hope to understand and regulate Facebook.
“We can’t afford less than full transparency,” he said. “As long as Facebook is operating in the shadows and hiding its research from public scrutiny, it’s irresponsible.”
It also gave insight into Facebook’s internal problems. He said the constant scandals left the Silicon Valley company understaffed because many quit and it was struggling to hire enough new employees.
Ultimately, he said, Facebook’s ownership structure is also an issue. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has disproportionate control over the company as he owns more than 55 percent of the voting shares.
“At the moment, no one holds Zuckerberg responsible but himself,” Ms. Haugen said. “Money stops with Mark.”
