In its first safety report on sexual and physical assaults, fatal accidents and other serious incidents, the company said Thursday that more than 1,800 sexual assaults occurred during Lyft rides in 2019.

Lyft’s security report It has long been a hit in the ride-hailing industry, as the company is facing lawsuits from victims of sexual assault while driving. He committed to releasing sexual assault statistics in 2019, when Uber released a similar report.

“While security incidents on our platform are incredibly rare, we recognize that even one is too much,” said Jennifer Brandenburger, Lyft’s head of policy development and research. blog post Thursday. “Behind every report is a real person and real experience.”

In 2019, the most recent year for data in the report, 1,807 sexual assaults during Lyft rides were reported, a 64 percent increase over 2017, the company said. However, as the number of rides increased even faster, overall safety increased, Lyft said, adding that the sexual assault incident rate decreased by 19 percent during this period.

Lyft said in the report that in 2019, four people died during physical attacks and 49 people died in motor vehicle accidents.

“The type of safety incidents detailed in this report occurred in 0.0002 percent of boarding, and more than 99 percent of all boardings occurred without any safety report,” Ms Brandenburger said.

Statistics are in line with similar events on Uber’s platform. Uber said in its 2019 safety report that the number of sexual assaults on its platform in the previous year represented only 0.0002 percent of all rides.

Rachel Abrams, a lawyer who represents nearly 1,000 sexual assault victims in lawsuits against Uber and Lyft, said Lyft’s report was delayed. “We’ve all been waiting for this,” he said.

“They’re not taking security measures to prevent this from happening, and it’s only going to continue to rise,” Abrams added. He said Lyft should add video surveillance to its vehicles to monitor for security issues.

Lyft said it’s working to make its platform as safe as possible, requiring drivers to undergo rigorous background checks and offering safety checks and emergency assistance to riders during off-course rides.
