Sunny Hostin and Meghan McCain want new rules for social media that will remove the anonymity of all users.
The co-hosts of ABC’s “The View” made the comments Wednesday after colleague Whoopi Goldberg discussed racist posts against Black athletes competing in the European Cup.
“I think it’s a great, great idea,” Ms. Hostin said of the idea, while supporting actor Idris Elba. “I mean, I am exposed to racist attacks on social media every day. I’m talking daily. Sometimes hundreds, sometimes thousands and – it’s painful, hurtful, and it’s always coming from someone with a cat icon, a flag icon, a frog icon, you know? All sorts of – an eagle icon and I think they are. It’s just Twitter thugs, social media thugs, hiding in their mother’s basements.”
Ms Hostin’s comment coincides with recent comments from the White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, supporting a general ban on social media platforms for violators of a company’s terms of service.
“You shouldn’t be banned from one platform for giving false information there, not others,” the Democrat said when talking about the online COVID-19 discussions.
Ms Hostin suggested that proving one’s identity on platforms like Twitter is no different than doing it for elections.
“They’re cowards,” he said. “You know, people are talking about identity all the time, it’s necessary for all sorts of things, then definitely ID should be required, a verified ID should be required before opening a social media account. The reason people troll like this is because they have little or no results due to their anonymity, and I love how Idris Elba puts it. ”
“I like it,” said Mrs. McCain. “I think, you know, this is a free country. You can say whatever you want. We have freedom of speech, but you can’t say what you want without consequences. … that’s what I’m in for.”
