Ms Gelburd said the organization also plans to analyze how many patients in the study were vaccinated and when. More than three-quarters of patients in the study became infected in 2021, most in the last half of the year. On average, patients were experiencing prolonged Covid symptoms that were available for diagnosis four and a half months after infection.

The findings show that prolonged Covid has a potentially surprising impact on people in the prime of their lives and on society at large. About 35 percent of patients were between the ages of 36 and 50, while about a third were between the ages of 51 and 64, and 17 percent were between the ages of 23 and 35. The children were also diagnosed with post-COVID conditions: About 4 percent of patients. when patients were 12 or younger, about 7 percent were between the ages of 13 and 22.

Six percent of patients were 65 years or older, possibly reflecting the fact that patients under the regular Medicare program were not included in the study. They were much more likely to have pre-existing chronic medical conditions than groups of young people with long-term Covid.

The insurance data analyzed did not include information about the patients’ race or ethnicity, the researchers said.

The analysis, which Ms Gelburd says has been evaluated by an independent academic reviewer, but not formally peer-reviewed, also calculated a risk score for patients as a way of estimating how likely people are to use their health resources. Comparing patients’ claims 30 days or more after being infected with all insurance benefits they had up to 90 days before contracting COVID-19, the study found that the average risk scores for patients in all age groups rose.

Ms Gelburd and other experts said the scores show that the long-term repercussions of Covid are not just limited to increased medical spending. Ms Gelburd notes how “many people quit their jobs, how many people have been given disability status, how many absenteeism from school”. “Like a pebble thrown into a lake, and these ripples revolving around that pebble are concentric impact circles.”
