Former President Barack Obama punctuated the debate on how to curb the spread of online disinformation on Thursday, calling for greater transparency from social media companies and more government surveillance and regulation of “toxic content” being distributed on their platforms.

“Whether we work for a tech company or consume social media, parent, legislation, advertiser on one of these platforms, now is the time to choose a side,” Obama said. “We now have a choice: Do we let our democracy perish or do we heal it?”
“This is the choice we face,” Mr. Obama said.
Mr. Obama said government regulation is needed to address the dark side of the digital revolution that has people confused about what to believe.
