House Republicans opposed the law because of the government’s overreach, which would drive inflation and rising costs. Minority leader California Representative Kevin McCarthy suggested that fears over backlash against the bill triggered the latest Democratic retirement round.
“They know this compromise bill will be the end of their Democratic majority and, for many, their congressional careers,” Mr McCarthy said.
If the bill clears the House, it faces a difficult path in the Senate where Republicans will have a clear chance to propose politically difficult changes and unravel the fragile Democratic coalition behind any of them. Two Democratic centrists, Kyrsten Cinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, have made no commitment to support it, and a single departure could bring the measure down in an equally divided room.
Some important provisions are in place, including a measure to provide work permits and legal protection to many undocumented immigrants; funds for four weeks of paid family and medical leave; and a generous increase in federal tax deduction for state and local taxes paid from $10,000 to $80,000 per year.
Liberals such as independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, chair of the Budget Committee, and at least one centrist Democrat, Maine Democratic Representative Jared Golden, have strongly objected to this tax cut, which would amount to a massive tax cut. for wealthy homeowners detailing their deductions. Sanders and other senators are discussing limiting who can benefit from the increased income cut.
The Republicans, who set an upper limit on the deduction in the 2017 tax laws, also highlighted the provision in their attacks on the legislation. Minority leader Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky mocked, “I’m almost impressed that our colleagues have found a way to be so contactless.”
But Democrats from high-tax states like New Jersey and New York demanded this provision as the price of their votes.
