Pope Francis urged Catholics in Scotland on Thursday to pray for a “fruitful outcome” as negotiators at the United Nations climate talks in Glasgow try to reach an agreement by the end of the week.
Inside A letter published by the VaticanFrancis said he regretted not being able to attend the COP26 summit as previously scheduled, and asked the summit’s decision makers for “God’s gifts of wisdom and strength.”
“Time is running out,” Francis said. “This opportunity must not be wasted, or else we will have to face the judgment of God for not being faithful stewards of the world he has entrusted to us.”
The Pope said the summit should address “one of the greatest moral issues of our time, the preservation of God’s creations that have been given to us as a garden to plant and a common home for our human family.”
The Vatican said last month that the Pope will not attend the summit and will instead head the negotiating team, Foreign Minister Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
Just before the summit, Francis Called on global leaders to “make radical decisions” This will “provide effective responses to the current ecological crisis”.
Since the inauguration of his papacy in 2013, Francis has made it clear that environmental issues are important to him. He noted that the poor suffer the most from the ecological problems brought about by economic models, industrial systems and policies that harm the environment.
