Siebe Thissen, the author of the book “The Boy Jumping from the Bridge”, about a worker who jumped from a bridge in 1933, said that the building was more than a bridge for the people of Rotterdam. “This is a monument,” he said. “This is Rotterdam’s identity.”
When city officials tried to demolish the bridge in the 1990s, he said, there were major protests as it was no longer used. The bridge is a reminder of the old days in Rotterdam, said.
“I think that’s why there’s been so much commotion about Jeff Bezos and his boat,” he said. accusations against Amazon. “People were like, ‘Why this guy?’ says. This is a working class town and they all know that Jeff Bezos of course exploits his workers, so people were like, ‘Why would this guy wash the bridge for his boat?’ says.”
As of Thursday, nearly 500 Facebook users said they’ll be attending an event titled “Pumping eggs on the superyacht Jeff Bezos,” where they’ll gather near the bridge to lay eggs on the boat. One person listed as the event organizer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The guide, who works at Tours by Locals, which connects tourists with local guides, said he doesn’t see much of a problem with the demolition of the bridge, as long as the residents of Rotterdam don’t bear the costs.
“I think most Rotterdammers will enjoy the international attention and many will come to watch,” he said. “On the other hand, the unimaginable wealth that people like Bezos have created for themselves shows that nothing can stop them from living their dreams and hobbies. Worlds pass by except those who will watch the ship from the city.”
