Russia withdraws from International Space Station due to sanctions against Ukraine

Russia will end its participation in the International Space Station amid objections to Western sanctions on the country for its war against Ukraine.

Dmitry Rogozin, chief executive of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, criticized the economic penalties in an interview with state television over the weekend, Bloomberg reported.

“The decision has already been taken, we don’t have to speak publicly about it,” Mr. Rogozin said. “I can only say that – in accordance with our obligations, we will notify our partners one year in advance that our work on the ISS has ended.”

The move was expected after Mr Rogozin previously threatened to end cooperation with NASA and the European Space Agency over the US and Europe’s economic sanctions against Moscow that had paralyzed the Russian economy.

According to Bloomberg, the ISS is currently home to six Americans, one Italian, one German, and three Russians.
