MOSCOW – A Moscow court fined Google Nearly $100 million as of Friday for failing to delete content prohibited by local law, a penalty that reflects Russia’s efforts to increase pressure on major tech companies.
The Tagansky District Court ruled that: Google repeatedly failed to remove banned content and ordered the company to pay an administrative fine of approximately 7.2 billion rubles (about $98.4 million).
Google He said he would review the court documents and decide on his next steps.
Russian authorities have steadily increased the pressure on social media platforms, accusing them of failing to clean up content related to drug use, weapons and explosives. Earlier this year, authorities blamed tech companies for failing to delete announcements about unsanctioned protests in support of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
Russian courts have previously given smaller sentences Google, Facebook and Twitter this year. The Moscow court’s decision on Friday marks the first time that the size of the fine has been calculated based on income.
Russian authorities have also demanded that foreign tech giants store Russian citizens’ personal data on servers in Russia, threatening fines or possible bans if they do not comply.
