Twitter slammed with lawsuit alleging data privacy breaches below

Twitter is facing a new lawsuit for allegedly using people’s data “confidentially and undisclosedly” after disclosures about the social media company’s actions as determined by the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission.

The Department of Justice and the FTC ordered Twitter to pay a $150 million fine last month for alleged data privacy breaches that occurred between 2013 and 2019, including the collection of phone numbers and emails for security purposes. targeted ads.

Lauren Price, a Maryland woman, sued Twitter this week in a proposed class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Ms. Price alleged violations of Twitter’s terms of service, breach of contract, breach of implied contract, unfair competition law, and unjust enrichment in a lawsuit filed by personal injury law firm Morgan & Morgan.

“Twitter’s ‘unfair’ actions and practices include misrepresentations regarding the purposes for collecting and using personal information described above, and failing to disclose it and then using that information for profit,” the lawsuit said. “Plaintiff and group members have sustained actual injury, including loss of money and/or property, as a result of Twitter’s unfair and/or illegal practices, i.e. unauthorized disclosure and use of their personal information. It has been proven to be used by Twitter for targeted advertising.”

The proposed class action references the FTC’s previous complaint to support its claims. In a federal judge’s decision following Twitter’s settlement with the federal government, Twitter only accepted that the FTC’s claims in the complaint were understood as correct for lawsuits filed by the US government.

Twitter declined to comment on the class action Ms Price proposed.

Questions about Twitter’s accuracy have angered the company in recent weeks. In May, billionaire Elon Musk said his Twitter takeover was pending details to back up the company’s claims about how many users are human against fake or spam accounts.

Mr. Musk later reiterated his commitment to the takeover, and Twitter acknowledged the challenges of measuring the number of active users in a regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last month.
