Yelp to cover travel costs for workers seeking abortions

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Bark It will cover the travel expenses of employees who need to travel out of state for an abortion, joining the ranks of major employers trying to help workers affected by the new restrictions in Texas and other states.

The aid, announced Tuesday, covers all 4,000 employees at the online review service, but its biggest impact seems likely to be on the 200 workers in Texas, who passed a law banning abortion in the state after six weeks of pregnancy.

“We have long been a strong advocate of equality in the workplace and believe that gender equality cannot be achieved if women’s health care rights are curtailed,” said Miriam Warren. Barkdiversity chief.

Other states, including Oklahoma, also restrict abortions, causing San Francisco-based Yelp and several other companies to draft policies aimed at helping their workers get reproductive health care in other states.

Last month, New York-based Citigroup announced plans to cover the travel expenses of any of its more than 220,000 employees, with thousands of Texas-based workers traveling to another state for abortions.

Uber and Lyft, the two largest ride-hailing services in the United States, announced last year that under new Texas law, they will pay legal fees to drivers who could be sued for transporting a passenger to an abortion appointment.

The policies expose companies to possible backlash from those who support abortion restrictions, but in an increasingly competitive job market it could be an advantage for employers with a footprint in states like Texas.
