YouTube removes RNC podcast with Trump over alleged ‘false information’

YouTube removed a video of an interview the Republican National Committee had with former President Donald Trump on Friday, claiming it violated the platform’s policy against false election information.

RNC President Ronna Romney McDaniel told the Washington Times that YouTube’s decision is the latest example of “Big Tech’s chilling approach to censoring conservative views.”

“Silicon Valley oligarchs care more about advancing their political agenda and removing their opponents from the platform than freedom of speech,” Ms McDaniel said. “This blatant censorship should concern every American: if they can silence a former President, they can silence any citizen they think has crossed the line.”

The video in question was a 30-minute interview that Mr. Trump did with Ms. McDaniel for the RNC’s “Real America” โ€‹โ€‹podcast. During the interview, Mr Trump claimed that the 2020 presidential election was “fraudulent” and “massive voter fraud”.

In an email to The Washington Times, YouTube told the RNC that language violated its policies regarding “election misinformation.”

“For clarification, this content is only allowed if it contains enough context with balancing views,” the social media giant wrote.

YouTube did not immediately respond to requests for comment on this story.

This isn’t the first time YouTube and other social media companies have censored or removed center-right voices. Twitter and Facebook have infamously banned Mr Trump for allegedly inciting violence with his election allegations following the riot in the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

But critics say companies apply a different standard to conservative voices on social media than those of prominent left-leaning elected officials and commentators.

For example, there are many videos on YouTube of unsuccessful Democratic candidates like Hillary Clinton and Stacey Abrams claiming that their candidacy has been blocked by voter pressure or foreign interference.
