Chinese Traveler Finds Moon Cube Is A Rabbit-Like Rock

Last November, China’s Yutu-2 lunar rover spotted something interesting on the far side of the moon. The image was blurry, but clear: the object looked like a cube standing on the moon’s surface. Its shape seemed too precise to be just a moonstone—perhaps something leftover from visiting aliens, like the monolith in Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

China’s space authorities have called it a “mystery hut”. Others called it the “moon cube”. Yutu-2 was sent for a closer look, and at the slow speed the rover could travel, it took weeks to approach.

on Friday, Our Space, a Chinese science channel The China National Space Administration has released an update. On the rim of the lunar crater there is no monolith, no hidden foundation. Up close, it turns out to be just a rock. The seemingly perfect geometric shape was just a play of angles, light and shadow.

While the mystery hut is not actually a hut, one of the rover’s remote-controlled drivers on Earth stated that the rock resembled a rabbit and one of the stones in front of it somewhat resembled a carrot. This is very convenient, as the name of the rover means “Jade Rabbit”.

The rover has traveled just over 1,000 meters in Von Kármán crater as part of the Chang’e-4 mission since arriving on the far side of the moon three years ago. It is the first mission to land on the far side.

Visual illusions are common in the history of space exploration, whether they’re seen by astronomers looking through telescopes on Earth or by robotic explorers on other worlds capturing images with cameras. Parallel to the rabbit-like rock found by China’s rover, Opportunity, a NASA rover on Mars, detected something resembling a rabbit’s ear in 2004. insulation or other soft material This fell from the rover itself.
