It wasn’t the first time recently that people were wondering about activities that seemed mysterious above them.
The sky above New York in December 2018 exploded in a blue light. People theorized about a UFO flight or an alien invasion, but the reason turned out to be a transformer explosion at the Con Edison substation. In 2015, a 500-pound meteor triggered a sonic boom in the skies over western Pennsylvania. reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In Pittsburgh on Saturday, Ms. Lake said no one had reported seeing anything “under the cloud deck” that was about 2,000 feet above the ground. Ms. Lake thinks the meteor may be “several thousand feet” above the ground, but not below the cloud cover.
Lake said the best theory for now about what happened in Pittsburgh on Saturday was a meteor explosion, but said it would remain just a theory — “unless someone finds some stones in their backyard,” he said.
Ms. Turnshek, a Carnegie Mellon lecturer, said what she and others in Pittsburgh experienced on New Year’s Day was “rare and remarkable”, a “once in a lifetime” event.
Although rare, there is no shortage of movies that depict the dangers of a meteor, asteroid, or comet hitting Earth (including “”includes”)The Day the Sky Exploded”“Meteor”“Armageddon“and end”don’t look up”).
Ms. Turnshek said astronomers are investigating this sort of thing. “If we found that a large object was coming,” the best solution would probably be “to send a rocket to sit next to it and the rocket’s gravitational force would deflect it off course.”
