SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook said on Wednesday Mike Schroepfer, chief technology officer and longtime executive, has planned to step down from his position next year in a rare change to the social network’s top positions.

Mr. Schroepfer, who has worked at Facebook for more than 13 years, plans to move into a senior friend role, which he says will allow him to focus on activities outside the company.

“This is a tough decision because of how much I love Facebook and how excited I am about the future we are building together,” Mr Schroepfer said in a post on his personal Facebook page. He said he will spend more time with his family and personal philanthropic efforts as he continues to work on recruiting and developing technical talent for Facebook.

Andrew Bosworth, another longtime Facebook employee and a close friend of Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, will be appointed as Mr. Schroepfer’s chief technology officer. Mr. Bosworth, better known internally as Boz, has worked in many different divisions of Facebook, including developing its advertising products and creating virtual reality and video devices.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
