Chatters may not be better at withdrawing money from subscribers than a creator managing their own inbox; actually, they could be worse. “You have to do your homework very well on who to hire,” the 29-year-old OnlyFans creator, named after Sonia LeBeau, told me. She has worked with agencies in the past and had negative experiences with them. At one point, the babblers hired to impersonate her did such a bad job that her most loyal subscribers realized they had been duped. She apologized to all her subscribers and continued to reply to her messages, she. Still, agencies can reap significant benefits, especially for large accounts, she said. Multiple chatters can work at the same time, allowing time for consecutive shifts so that no message goes unanswered. Popular accounts often receive so many messages that it’s nearly impossible for a single person to reply to them all; Unanswered messages mean money left on the table. Then there are all the other tasks that a OnlyFans creator requires, like content creation on social media and external marketing, all of which take time from replying to DMs. Chatters lighten the load.

Chatbots also offer creators a buffer from their subscribers who can be rude, stingy, or worse. “Do you constantly hang on your phone to negotiate prices for exclusive videos with hundreds of free, lone reptiles? Sounds fun!” Think Expansion’s website reads an article announcing its services to models. Dallas believes most OnlyFans models with large followings have a team in their corner. “Consistently creating content, encouraging 20, 30, 50+ conversations per day. and it becomes overwhelming to maintain,” he wrote.

However, there is a large pool of workers around the world willing to have these conversations, often for lower wages than Americans do with hamburger patties. Back in February, I spoke with Andre, a chatter who works for the Barcelona-based OnlyFans agency called KC Incorporation in Manila, about Zoom. He refused to give his last name: Although he finds the job satisfying, he does not think his family will approve. Many Western companies rely on an outsourced workforce in the Philippines for customer service and data entry – prior to his current role, Andre worked at a T-Mobile call center. Now, it sends a daily four-hour shift message to subscribers of a model. When his shift ends, he logs out and another chatter logs in and resumes conversations.

During a chattering post, Andre became intimately familiar with the quirks and desires of subscribers. Over time, she learned from the sex work stereotype: More than just sexual satisfaction, she said, most men just want someone to talk to. Facilitating those familiar conversations is good for business. “When I saw ‘Oh, this person has been texting me for a few weeks,'” she said, “we’re taking notes on these people.” Andre said most of the big money spenders he spoke to seemed pretty normal, albeit a little depressed and isolated. He said that a small minority clearly suffer from mental health problems. Sympathetic: “The world is a lonely place. And I think these people are the loneliest.”

In fact, Andre sees a connection between his own predicament and his clients. Many people who do business like his, he said, are poor. They have “nowhere else to go” and “nothing to do”. Desperate: “If you have to eat at the end of the day, you have to do what you have to do.” He said that the people he talked to showed similar desperation, albeit for different reasons. “If you’re alone, if you don’t want to be doomed to be alone, you have to do what you have to do.” A few chatters I spoke to in Asia said they make pretty good money compared to other outsourced jobs. But their revenue is tiny compared to the profits generated by their work for agencies that have discovered a goldmine at the intersection of globalization and Western alienation.

Whether it’s legal is another question. In November last year, two former employees of a company called Unruly Agency filed a lawsuit alleging wage theft and wrongful dismissal. The agency manages the OnlyFans accounts of a number of Gen-Z stars, including social media creators like rapper Lil Pump and Tana Mongeau. In the lawsuit, first reported by Insider, complainants said executives were instructed to “lie, deceive and mislead fans” by sending ghost text messages on behalf of popular models in order to pay or tip them for locked content. They claim their boss has come up with a system where account managers will keep track of what questions fans ask models most often. Managers would then ask the models to record a video answering each question and encourage them to change outfits between videos to make the clips look like they were recorded on different days. Managers would send the videos to thousands of fans, each of whom thought they were getting a personalized response to a question they had specifically asked. (Unruly has denied these allegations.)

In the United States, fraud is typically defined as an entity or individual deliberately deceiving another to obtain something of value. In other words, lies cannot be put into action on their own. You could certainly argue that a chattering subscriber is being tempted to spend money they wouldn’t have otherwise, based on false information. But you could easily argue the opposite: The photos and videos subscribers receive are real depictions of nude women, even if the perceived affinity for the sale is false. After all, this online sex chat – in a post-“Catfish” world, should one expect their internet accounts to truly represent who is managing them?
