According to Facebook, Russia has limited its citizens’ access to Facebook after the social media giant refused to stop verifying the country’s state-run media.
Facebook, which has been reorganized as a meta, said Friday that it has rejected Russia’s request to verify and de-tagging content published by state-owned media outlets. In response, Moscow announced a “partial restriction” of access to the platform.
“Ordinary Russians use our apps to express themselves and organize for action,” Meta vice president Nick Clegg said in a statement posted on Twitter. “We want them to continue to make their voices heard, share what’s happening and stay organized on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.”
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Meta organized a team of employees to respond in real time to content that, according to the company, promotes violence, violates company rules, or contains hate speech.
The company said its cybersecurity teams will also seek coordinated efforts to abuse the company’s platforms.
According to Reuters, Facebook previously paid Russia a fine for content the company refused to remove. Facebook paid a fine of 17 million rubles, or about $230,000, late last year.
