Amazon will investigate allegations of gender bias in its cloud division.

Amazon has hired an outside law firm to investigate allegations of widespread gender discrimination in part of its cloud computing division, in an email it sent to employees last week.

The investigation came in response to a petition filed by a group of employees in the Professional Services group of Amazon Web Services, an organization known as ProServ that helps companies adopt cloud computing. In the petition, employees allege gender bias and bullying in the department. Washington Post, first reported In the investigation, it was stated that more than 550 employees signed the petition.

AWS’s new CEO, Adam Selipsky, responded in an email to the petition’s leaders.

“We have hired an outside firm to investigate and understand any inappropriate behavior that you or others may have experienced or witnessed,” he wrote. “This firm is experienced and objective, and I will personally review its independent findings to guide further action.”

Amazon recruits heavily at AWS, the largest cloud computing provider. The industry is largely dominated by men. Nearly 23 percent of Amazon’s top leaders are women, company data to show.

In May, five women, including one working at ProServ, to sue accusing him of various forms of racial and gender discrimination, the company claims the company denies.
