Media Matters urges Apple and Google to launch Twitter if it becomes the site

One of the most influential left-wing organizations has urged Twitter’s top advertisers, such as Apple and Google, to discontinue the app if Twitter’s new owner allows Twitter to “become vulnerable to hatred, extremism and disinformation”.

Angelo Carusone, head of Media Matters for America, said on Monday that Elon Musk, who describes himself as an absolutist for free speech, “will loosen a number of very basic protections against harassment, abuse and disinformation that Twitter has put in place for years.

Mr Carusone claimed that Twitter was under new ownership and “effectively opened the barrage of hate and lies and used Twitter’s market-leading position to force other social media companies to back out”.

The head of the progressive media watchdog said that under Mr Musk’s Twitter ownership, former President Donald Trump’s account will likely be restored, “along with a host of other accounts dealing with abuse, harassment and repeated violations of Twitter rules. ”

But on Monday afternoon, Mr. Trump announced that he had no plans to return to Twitter and would instead be active on TRUTH Social, the social media platform he founded and launched in March as an alternative to Twitter.

The head of Media Matters also suggested that Google, Apple and other tech giants remove the Twitter app as Facebook and Twitter are increasingly cutting Parler, a social media platform alternative that Facebook and Twitter are increasingly blocking of such posts. . It was considered “false information”.

“But not all hope is lost. Accountability now rests with Twitter’s top advertisers; Twitter needs to make it clear that it will march if it becomes completely free from hate, extremism and disinformation.”

“It’s also critical that Google and Apple keep Twitter the same standards they apply to other apps like Parler – reiterating that Twitter will not receive special treatment and any breach of its terms of service will result in the platform being removed from the app stores,” said Mr. Carusone.

Parler has become one of the fastest growing apps in the United States upon its launch in 2020, billing itself as a free speech platform. By January 2021, Apple had listed Parler as the number one free app for its iPhones, but was on life support 24 hours after it was removed from Apple.

The denial of the application comes three days after the January 6th march on the US Capitol, when supporters of Mr. Trump rioted outside and inside the building.

After Apple and Google removed the app, claiming it wasn’t adequately moderating its users’ posts, Amazon did the same, removing the company from its hosting service, causing Parler to go offline.

The site returned a month after finding the servers to host the site.

Twitter accepted on Monday Mr. Musk’s offer to buy the social media company for an estimated $44 billion, and the deal will hand over Twitter to the world’s richest man, who is demanding fewer restrictions on digital speech.

“Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where issues vital to the future of humanity are discussed,” Musk said in a statement.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, open-source algorithms to increase trust, defeating spam bots and verifying the identity of all people.”
