President Biden said on Monday that he wants social media companies to “look in the mirror” and fight false information about COVID-19 vaccines on their own.
Mr Biden said he read an article on Facebook that found that 60% of vaccine misinformation came from a dozen people.
“Facebook doesn’t kill people, these 12 people are giving false information. Everyone who listens to him suffers from it,” Mr. Biden told White House correspondents. “It’s killing people, that’s bad information.”
Mr. Biden created a stir on Friday when he responded to a reporter who asked social media companies about his message about misinformation about the pandemic.
“I mean, really look, the only epidemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and that’s – they’re killing people,” the president said at the time.
Facebook took exception.
Guy Rosen, the company’s vice president of integrity, pointed to data in a blog post showing that vaccine acceptance among Facebook users has increased, reaching 85%, so Mr. Biden shouldn’t blame them for failing to meet his goals.
“The reality is that vaccine acceptance has increased among Facebook users in the US,” said Mr Rosen. “These and other facts tell a very different story than the administration has been suggesting in recent days.”
Mr Biden has revealed that he doesn’t see Facebook as a killer, but said he thinks it could do more to break the lies about the shootings.
“My hope is that they will do something about the misinformation rather than take Facebook personally,” he said. “That’s what I mean.”
